How are leading Indian politicians doing?
Narendra Modi: Indian prime minister is on his way to secure third straight win from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh after initially trailing behind his closest rival, Ajay Rai of Congress. With 611,439 votes in his favour, he maintains a lead of 152,355 votes.
Amit Shah: Home minister is projected to win the election from his home state Gujarat, where he is leading by 737,357 votes.
A candidate for the BJP in the Gandhinagar seat in Gujarat, Mr Shah so far has over 990,00 votes while Ms Patel is trailing has received confidence of 261,050 voters.
Gujarat, both Shah and Modi’s home state, appears set to provide a near clean sweep to the BJP, which lead in 25 of 26 parliamentary seats.Kangana Ranaut: Bollywood actor
Kangana Ranaut, making her political debut as the BJP candidate from Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi, has taken a huge lead as per trends by the Election Commission and is set to win against Congress candidate Vikramaditya Singh.
She has secured 525,691 votes, while her Congress rival is behind by 72,696 votes.
Rahul Gandhi: The leading face of the Congress-led INDIA alliance, Mr Gandhi is comfortably ahead of his rival Dinesh Pratap Singh, with 684,61 votes in Rae Bareli.
He is also contesting his current seat in Wayanad, Kerala, where he has a comfortable lead of 361,394 votes over Annie Raja of Communist Party of India. In India people can contest multiple seats and must choose only one to take up as an MP.
Shashi Tharoor: Senior Congress leader and former UN diplomat has fought back to lead the BJP’s Rajeev Chandrasekhar in the race for Kerala’s Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat, which he has won for three straight terms.
Mr Tharoor was ahead by around 7,000 votes. Earlier, he trailed by twice that.
Akhilesh Yadav: For two elections in a row, it seemed like the BJP was unsurmountable in Uttar Pradesh. After the Ram Temple inauguration, the party hoped to secure over 60 seats in the state out of a total of 80 available.
However, the Hindu nationalist party is in for a big jolt, largely from the Samajwadi Party led by Akhilesh Yadav. The party is leading on 34 seats, taking the total for INDIA alliance to 42.
Mr Yadav himself is leading by 138,008 votes against the BJP’s Subrat Pathak.
