Anthony Smith thinks UFC welterweight champ Leon Edwards would never ever think about middleweight if Khamzat Chimaev held the title.
Edwards (20-3 MMA, 12-2 UFC), who safeguards his 170-pound title versus Colby Covington (17-3 MMA, 12-3 UFC) in the UFC 296 headliner on Dec. 16, revealed interest in going up to 185 pounds with a win. Smith stated there’s a range of welterweight competitors waiting for Edwards, and he must focus on that.
“I believe you’ve got to clean out your department,” Smith stated on Michael Bisping’s YouTube channel“Leon going up, that a person strikes a little more difficult than a few of the previous ones. Like, begin, man. I like Leon a lot, huge Leon fan, however he’s just ever battled Kamaru Usman in title battles. There are a great deal of title oppositions coming. You got his next battle with Colby, Belal is going to remain in there.
“There’s some up-and-comers. There’s Shavkat (Rakhmonov), Ian Garry. There’s guys we got to keep rolling. Gilbert Burns is right there. He’s one win far from a title shot. He’s got a difficult list of individuals coming his method. I simply do not understand if now is the time to go up.”
Smith likewise stated Edwards is just discussing chasing after the middleweight title since he sees present champ Sean Strickland as a winnable battle.
“Of course, he’s going to wish to go up today,” Smith stated. “If Khamzat (Chimaev) was the champ, I do not understand if we ‘d see Leon going to middleweight so rapidly, however I believe we have a champ in Sean Strickland that he thinks compare well with him, and it stylistically makes a great deal of sense. I concur with a few of the disappointment. Listen, if I had a world title, perhaps I ‘d do the exact same sh * t.”
