As voting for the 379 seats, representing over two-thirds of Lok Sabha, ended on Monday, turnout dipped to 67.3% in the fourth phase, compared to 69.6% in 2019, mirroring the falling trend seen during the previous rounds. The overall turnout for 2019 does not include the delimited seat of Srinagar, which recorded the lowest turnout this time round, at 38%.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday took a jibe at PM Modi, saying if the “BJP can make 22 billionaires in the country, his party can make crores of lakhpatis”.
He also expressed confidence in his party’s victory in the ongoing Lok Sabha election and said Narendra Modi won’t become Prime Minister on June 4.
Addressing a public meeting in Uttar Pradesh’s Raebareli, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said, “Earlier Narendra Modi used to talk about crossing 400, now he is not even talking about crossing 150. You should write this down… Narendra Modi will not become the Prime Minister of this country on 4 June.”
“If they can make 22 billionaires, we can make crores of ‘lakhpatis’. On June 4, a list of all the poor in India will be made, the name of a woman from each family will be selected and Rs 1 lakh will be credited to the bank account of that woman, each year..,’ he added.
He accused PM Modi of imposing the Agniveer scheme on the country.
“PM Narendra Modi and his office have imposed the Agniveer scheme on the country. He wants the money that goes as pension and in the canteen facilities of Jawan to go to Adani in the form of defence contracts,” he said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi applauded the people of the Srinagar parliamentary constituency for the “encouraging turnout” of 38 per cent, which is more than double the 14.43 pc polling in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
In the first general election in the valley after the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, polling took place in 2,135 polling stations on Monday across the Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency containing assembly segments of Srinagar, Ganderbal, Pulwama, Budgam and Shopian districts.
In his post on X, PM Modi said, “Would especially like to applaud the people of Srinagar Parliamentary Constituency for the encouraging turnout, significantly better than before. The abrogation of Article 370 has enabled the potential and aspirations of the people to find full expression. Happening at the grassroots level, it is great for the people of J&K, in particular the youth.”
Srinagar voter turnout of 38 per cent in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls is the highest in several decades. There are 24 candidates in the fray as compared to 12 in the 2019 general election.
The voter turnout in Srinagar was 14.43 per cent in 2019, 25.86 per cent in 2014, 25.55 per cent in 2009, 18.57 per cent in 2004, 11.93 per cent in 1999, 30.06 per cent in 1998, and 40.94 per cent in 1996.

After hearing the news of his brother’s death, a voter, identified as Banarasi Lal Mishra (60), had first cast his vote and then went to his brother’s house to offer condolences. Voting was to begin at 7am, but he reached the polling station before time. Banarasi Lal is a voter in Akbarpur parliamentary seat.
As he reached the gate of RK Mission School Ramkrishna Nagar, his cousin Srinivas arrived there and told him about the sudden demise of his brother Karuna Shankar Mishra.
One would have turned back after receiving such a news, but Banarasi Lal decided to stay back.

A voter turnout of over 67 per cent was recorded on Monday in the fourth phase of the Lok Sabha elections covering 96 constituencies spread over 10 states and Union Territories, with scattered incidents of violence reported in West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh.
West Bengal, where polling was held in eight constituencies, again recorded an impressive turnout at 78.44 per cent, the highest among states/UTs in this phase, closely followed by Andhra Pradesh (25 seats) at 78.25 per cent and Odisha (four seats) at 73.97 per cent.
Srinagar constituency in Jammu and Kashmir witnessed 37.98 per cent voting in the first Lok Sabha election in the Valley since the scrapping of Article 370, with the EC stating that it was the “highest turnout in decades”.
According to the EC’s voter turnout app at midnight, the overall voting in this phase was 67.70 per cent.
However, it said that this was an “approximate” trend as data from polling stations was still being collated.
Among other states, Bihar (five seats) recorded 57.06 per cent polling, Jharkhand (four seats) 65.31 per cent, Maharashtra (11 seats) 59.64 per cent, Telangana (17 seats) 64.87 per cent and Uttar Pradesh (13) 58.05 per cent.

Even as KPs lined up across special polling stations in Jammu amid tight security, several of them had to return without casting their vote. “I came to the polling station with three members of my family to cast our votes despite such heat. We carried our EPIC (Voter ID) cards too. But we found our names missing from the electoral roll. It is a denial of our right to vote,” Veena, a resident of Jagti camp and a migrant from the erstwhile Habbakadal area of Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency, said. She said what’s the use of the voter ID card if that is not enough.
