Conference tournament action is popping up in more places around college basketball on Tuesday as the race for automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament heats up. Second round-action is on tap in the ASUN while the Horizon League, Patriot League and Sun Belt tournaments will tip off.
No. 8 seed Army and No. 9 seed Holy Cross are squaring off in Patriot League action for the right to face No. 1 seed Colgate in the quarterfinals on Thursday. Colgate is seeking its fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance under Matt Langel after winning the regular-season title with a 16-2 league mark.
Three games are on tap in the Horizon League bracket, but it’s unclear who No. 1 seed Oakland’s opponent will be. The Grizzlies, who are seeking their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2011, will get to play the lowest-seeded remaining team after the first-round action concludes.
Preliminary action is also getting under way in the Sun Belt, where the top four seeds won’t have to play until Saturday’s quarterfinal round. No. 11 seed Texas State will take on No. 14 seed Old Dominion, while No. 12 seed Louisiana-Monroe plays No. 13 seed Coastal Carolina.
As for the ASUN, No. 10 seed Jacksonville is playing No. 1 seed Eastern Kentucky after Jacksonville beat No. 9 seed Kennesaw State 92-86 on Monday. No. 2 seed Stetson is facing No. 8 seed Queens, which beat No. 7 seed Florida Gulf Coast 69-63 in the other first-round game. Queens is transitioning from Division II to Division I and is not eligible to make the NCAA Tournament.
The Ohio Valley Conference will be the first to crown a champion on Saturday. The Missouri Valley, Big South and ASUN will be just one day behind them as their tournaments conclude Sunday.
As automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament are secured, we’ll be noting each of them here, featuring 15 automatic bids to the men’s and women’s NCAA tournaments on CBS, streaming on Paramount+ and on CBS Sports Network.
