The vibes in the former president and now convicted felon’s hometown … they were impeccable.

The jury announced that it had a verdict at 4:20 p.m. (on purpose? hah!). After a rather pregnant pause—the jurors had to fill out some forms, a lot of forms, actually, it turned out—Donald Trump was charged as guilty on all 34 felony counts. Cheers exploded in downtown Manhattan near the courthouse where he was tried, Wikipedia editors started furiously updating Trump’s bio, the New York Times liveblogger’s assessment of Trump anger levels went into overdrive, and Jake Tapper intoned: “For those wondering about the political consequences of these 34 guilty verdicts, the short answer is … nobody has any idea. Period.”
As of press time, though, still no updated reaction video from Michael Cohen’s TikTok.

Those outside of the Manhattan courthouse late Thursday afternoon included a fake Trump spotted waving to the crowd; a group of people with coordinated signs that read “Only Wins When He Cheats” and “Lies Have Consequences”; and a protester with a giant “Trump Convicted” sign propped up on poles. Also, as it was rush hour, there were lots of commuters walking by who stopped to check out the scene.
New York City, Trump’s home for decades and where in the past eight years he has been increasingly booed, seemed to erupt in celebration. There were cheers in Park Slope, and one Slate reporter saw a woman look at her phone, read the verdict, and shriek, “Sometimes good things do happen!” Another Slate colleague, at a bar in southern Italy, reported that all the Americans similarly looked at their phones at once and chorused “Guilty!”

Sentencing will take place on July 11, which happens to be four days before the Republican National Convention. Technically, that means the Republican Party doesn’t have to chain itself to a convicted felon, but judging by early reactions from party leaders, it will anyway.
