UFC and BKFC veteran Geane Herrera has died at the age of 33.
BKFC officials confirmed the news on Monday along with a GoFundMe set up by Herrera’s family to help with funeral expenses following his tragic death. Herrera reportedly died following a motorcycle accident in Tampa, Fla.
“Our family is devastated by the tragic loss of our beloved Geane Carlos Herrera known in the professional fighting world as “La Pulga”, whose life was cut way too short at only 33 years-old,” Herrera’s family wrote in the GoFundMe. “Geane leaves behind a 16 year-old son, his 3-month pregnant girlfriend, mother, father, sisters, a brother and a family that loves him and will deeply miss him.”
In 2015, Herrera signed to the UFC and immediately jumped into the deep end of the flyweight division with a fight against one-time title challenger Ray Borg. He came up short that night but bounced back with a knockout win over Joby Sanchez in his next appearance in the UFC.
Borg paid tribute to his former opponent on Instagram.
“Had the pleasure of sharing the octagon with him in 2015,” Borg wrote. “He was a good guy, my prayers are with him and his family during this tough time.”
His journey with the UFC came to a close with two more losses but Herrera eventually made his way to bare-knuckle fighting after signing with BKFC in 2021.
In his debut with the promotion, Herrera scored a second-round knockout over Abdiel Velazquez.
Sadly that ended up as Herrera’s only appearance in BKFC with his family stating that an injury effectively prevented him from fighting again.
