With her embellished Brazilian jiu jitsu background, expectations were high for Mackenzie Dern when she got in the UFC in early 2018. More than 5 years later on, she’s not come close to reaching them.
After 2 triumphes to open her UFC period, Dern lost in her 3rd octagon look to Amanda Ribas, however she reacted by winning 4 successive battles. That streak ended in October 2021, throughout which she’s rotated wins and losses to publish a 2-3 record. Dern lost to Marina Rodriguez and Yan Xiaonan Selected up wins over Tecia Torres and Angela Hill before suffering a ravaging TKO loss to previous strawweight champ Jessica Andrade this previous Saturday at UFC 295.
The loss to Andrade, who was on a three-fight skid, was the worst of Dern’s profession after she was dropped 4 times before eventually ended up in Round 2. Dern’s striking looked silly sometimes.
The bad efficiency has us questioning: Are Dern’s UFC title goals kaput, or can the 30-year-old still right the ship? Our “Spinning Back Clique” panel of Mike Bohn, Nolan King and Simon Samano responded to that concern with host “Gorgeous” George Garcia.
